The Basset Hound is part of the scent hound breed that were bred to hunt by scent. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to the Bloodhound.

They are short, standing 13 to 15 inches and weigh between 50 to 70 pounds. They are a large dog on very short legs with big long ears.

The breed is very calm and great companions being very loyal. They are friendly around strangers, hate to be alone and make excellent pets for families with children.

Training can be difficult for owners but gentle and patient training is the most effective. Trainers must be persistent and make training entertaining to achieve the desired result.
