The Afghan Hound is part of the sighthound breed. They have a unique thick, fine, silky coat that was needed for the cold mountain temperatures of Afghanistan where they were originally bred to hunt wolves, foxes and gazelles. The Afghan Hound is tall at 24 to 29 inches with an average weight of 45 to 60 pounds. There temperament is reserved but lively with a very high activity level. Their average lifespan is 12 to 15 years with the major health issues are allergies and cancer. They are currently becoming a popular house pet and have been popular at dog shows.
